You are beautiful beyond description
Too marvelous for words
Too wonderful for comprehension
Like nothing ever seen or heard
Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom?
Who can fathom the depths of Your love?
You are beautiful beyond description
Majesty, enthroned above
And I stand, I stand in awe of You
I stand, I stand in awe of You
Holy God, to whom all praise is due
I stand in awe of You
Think about the lyrics of the song above. It is one of my favorite songs we sing in worship to our God. It is one of my favorites for many reasons. The first reason being it is actually about God. So many songs we sing are not about Him and are instead about us. Secondly, it is about just how amazing God is. It is a song about how unfathomable God is. Sometimes when I am in prayer I struggle to find the words to say to God. I struggle to let Him know just how much I love Him. I struggle to find a way in which to thank Him. I struggle to praise Him in a way that is appropriate to who He is, the Almighty and Holy God. Maybe you have that same struggle. This is not something we should be ashamed of. God is supposed to produce a sense of awe in our lives. We should consistently stand amazed because of the great things He has done and because of His very nature. A simple study of God and of His revealed word to us will make us fall in love with Him. I love the way John ends his Gospel when he writes, “Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written,” (Jn 21:25). John knew his Lord was so great and mighty, that if he was to write everything He did, the world would not be big enough to hold them. What does that tell you about the greatness of God? Job reflects this line of thought when he says this about God, “(He) who does great things beyond searching out and marvelous things beyond number” (Job 9:10). When we know our God, we will be blown away by His greatness. Paul writes in Romans, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” (Rom 11:33). Perhaps it is a good thing when someone asks us who God is and we simply cannot respond, because we cannot describe the work of God in our lives. This is the result of knowing God and being completely captivated by Him. Recently, I’ve been studying the book of Exodus and I’ve been blown away by the might and power of God. In the book of Exodus, we see Him do so many great and mighty things that I cannot quite picture in my head. He appears in a burning bush (Exodus 3). He providentially protects Moses while Pharoah is slaughtering the Hebrew newborns (Exodus 1-2). He makes a promise to get His chosen people out of Egyptian captivity (Exodus 3). He molds a scared and unconfident Moses into a leader of men and a child of God. He pours out His wrath on the disobedient and hardened Egyptians through the ten plagues (Exodus 7-12). He protects His people by the blood of the Passover Lamb (Exodus 12). He guides them out of Egypt through the great Exodus (Exodus 12). He parts the Red Sea and protects His people (Exodus 14). He crushes Pharoah and his army in an act of judgment (Exodus 14). He provides for His people in the form of manna and water (Exodus 16-17). He enacts rules and commandments that we know are good and just, though we often times forget that (Exodus 20-23). He shows His amazing glory on Mount Sinai (Exodus 19-20, 24). He orders the building of the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle in which He would dwell with His people and show His power. (Exodus 25-40). Look how much He has done in Exodus alone. He works in the same way throughout all of Scripture and you can see Him everywhere. That’s the God we serve and that’s the God I want to know. I want to encourage you to get to know God. He will change your life and you will stand in awe of Him with your fellow saints.
